Automatically remove silences and mistakes from talking-head videos

Cutting pauses and retakes by hand is the slowest part of a talking-head video. It’s also the most boring. Here’s how to get it done for you, and how to film so it comes out cleaner.

Why silences and stumbles matter

On TikTok and Reels, a one-second pause feels long, and people scroll away. Tight cuts keep the energy up, so most talking-head videos that do well have had every gap removed.

Cutting them automatically

Upload your take and ask Cutleap to “cut the pauses, ums and restarts.” Cutleap transcribes what you said, so it can tell where you stopped, stumbled or started a sentence again.

If you’re reading a script, ask it to keep only the last full take of each line. That way you can mess up as often as you like while filming.

Film so the cuts land cleanly

When you stumble, pause for a second, then say the whole sentence again from the start. Don’t pick it up halfway. A clean restart gives a clean cut.

Prop your phone at eye level, face a window, and film somewhere quiet. Echo and background noise make cuts more obvious.

Hide the jump cuts

Lots of cuts can look jumpy. Cover them with B-roll from your own clips, or ask for a small zoom on alternate cuts so they feel deliberate.

Try asking

“Cut the pauses, ums and restarts.”

“I read from a script. Keep only my last full take of each line.”

“Cut every pause longer than half a second, but keep the one before the punchline.”
